Ruth, Aaron or Bonds - who is really the greatest

George Herman Ruth was known as "The Babe", most likely because of how young he was when he played his first professional baseball game for the Baltimore Orioles of the International League. He was barely 19 years old at the time. His time there was only brief, and he was acquired by Harry Frazee, owner of the Boston Americans (Red Sox), and made his debut on July 11th, 1914. Appearing in only five games as a pitcher, he recorded four victories out of the five starts.

Between the 1917 and 1918 seasons, Ruth was shifted from the mound into right field so as to get more playing time due to his developing prowess as a hitter. Obviously, as the old cliché goes, the rest is history. Despite the fact that one of his pitching records stood for 62 years, it was his bat that ultimately did all the talking for him.

In the 22 seasons that Ruth played, he became one of the most dominant hitters that the game has ever seen. His stats were the following:

2,503 games played --- 8,399 at bats --- 2,873 total hits --- 714 home runs --- 2,213 runs batted in .342 batting average --- .474 on base percentage --- .690 slugging average

If you look at the numbers, he hit a home run every 11.76 at bats. Nearly 25% of his hits were round trippers but if you massage that a little, he drove in a run every 3.8 times at the plate and each home run accounted for 3.1 RBI's. From 1923 to 1932, he hit over 40 home runs in nine of those 10 seasons. The only year that kept him from doing it 10 years straight was 1925 when an early season illness cost him nearly a third of the season. He played in only 98 games and still hit 25 homers and had a .290 batting average. But worthy of note here is that he hit 40 or more homers for seven straight seasons from 1926 to 1932, and averaged 34 home runs per season during his 21 years in the bigs.

There were a number of legends that arose during Ruth's career, but the most noteworthy of all was his famous "Called Shot" in the third game of the 1932 World Series against the Chicago Cubs whom the Yankees swept in four straight. Ruth had already homered earlier in the game and as the story goes, he raised his right arm, pointed towards the deepest part of Wrigley Field and drilled the ball over the center field wall to the right of the flagpole and a reported 490 feet.

Other facets of his career include appearing in the first ever All Star Game in 1933 and hitting the first ever home run in All Star Game history. He was also one of the first five players (himself, Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, and Honus Wagner) inducted into the Hall in its inaugural year of 1936, one year after he retired. In 1936 Ruth was hired by the Brooklyn Dodgers to coach first base, but quit at the end of the season. It was the last job he would ever have in major league baseball.

Now our topic of discussion shifts to Henry Aaron. Born of humble beginnings, Henry "Hammerin' Hank" Aaron played his first major league game when he was 20 years old. Aaron reportedly tried out for the Dodgers when he was still in high school, but he failed to make the team and returned to school. Prior to his debut with the Milwaukee Braves, Aaron spent a brief stint in the minors and played for the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro American League. Aaron spent 21 seasons with the Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves, and finished his career in 1976 after two seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers. It was only fitting that he would finish in the city that his career started in.

During his 23 years in the majors, Aaron was known more for his consistency rather than sheer power alone. The following are his statistics for those 23 seasons:

3,298 games played --- 12,364 at bats --- 3,771 total hits --- 755 home runs --- 2,297 runs batted in .305 batting average --- .374 on base percentage --- .555 slugging average

Looking at his numbers, he hit a home run every 16.38 at bats, 20% of his hits were homers, and each home run accounted for 3.04 RBI's. He hit 40 or more homers in eight seasons and 30 or more homers in 15 out of 17 seasons. Aaron, by the way is also the only player in major league history to record 30 home runs in 15 seasons, and he made the All Star team for 21 straight seasons from 1955 through 1975. In addition to all this, Aaron holds the MLB records for the most career runs batted in (2,297), the most career extra base hits (1,477), and the most career total bases (6,856).

The Hank Aaron Award was created to honor his contributions to the game, both on and off the field. It should also be noted that he was the last Negro League player to play in the majors, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1982, his very first year of eligibility. Perhaps Mickey Mantle said it best when it came to a description of Hank Aaron. "As far as I'm concerned, (Hank) Aaron is the best ball player of my era. He is to baseball of the last 15 years what Joe DiMaggio was before him. He's never received the credit he's due."

So now we come to Barry Lamar Bonds, probably the most controversial sports figure out there. Right up front, this is not going to be a "bash Barry" tirade. I'm not even going to go there. The purpose of this article is to compare the accomplishments of the three best home run hitters in the game, not to demean any of them.

As most of you know, Barry is the son of former major leaguer Bobby Bonds, and is also the Godson of the great Willie Mays. He made his major league debut on May 30th, 1986 for the Pittsburgh Pirates being drafted sixth in the first round of the 1985 MLB draft. He also enjoyed a stellar career in college when he played for Arizona State University.

Barry is most recognized not just for breaking Hank Aaron's record of 755 career homers, but also for eclipsing Mark McGwire's single season home run record of 70 (set in 1968) when hit 73 round trippers three years later in 2001. He had an incredible .863 slugging percentage (a major league record), a .515 on base percentage, 17 home runs in the month of May, 39 home runs by the All Star break (a major league record), and finished the season with 177 walks (a major league record at that time).
His current up to date career stats through the 2007 season are as follows:

2,986 games played --- 9,847 at bats --- 2,935 total hits --- 762 home runs --- 1,196 runs batted in .298 batting average --- .444 on base percentage --- .607 slugging percentage

Not only are his numbers impressive, but he is still an active player, even though in 2008, you will most likely see him in another uniform since the Giants did not offer him another contract. According to these stats, Barry hits a homer every 12.92 at bats or once for every 3.85 hits. However, most of his homers are solo shots since he only produces 1.57 RBI's for each home run. He has hit 40 or more home runs in eight seasons (an average of 48.25 HR's in each of those seasons) and 30 or more homers in 13 seasons.

Bonds' other notable accomplishments include 2,558 walks and he eclipsed his own record for bases on balls in the 2004 season when he walked an astounding 232 times, 55 times more than the record he set himself only three years earlier.

We've come to the point in this article where I give you not only my opinion as to which one of these three sluggers was the greatest, but also my reasoning for the choice. Bonds will be playing in his 23rd season, Aaron played 23 seasons, and Ruth played 21 complete seasons with only 28 games played in what would have been a 22nd had he lasted until season's end. Also remember that when Ruth played, there were only 154 games played in a season.
Aaron's first seven seasons (1954-60) were 154 game seasons, but the schedule expanded to 162 games effective with the 1961 season. All of Bonds' career years have been 162 game seasons. Ruth played in that era of baseball when games were only played during the day while Aaron and Bonds played both day and night games.

Traveling and accommodations were anything but luxurious during Ruth's era, Aaron's were improved, and Bonds has obviously had the cushiest ones of the three. Equipment and training has gone from bottom of the barrel during Ruth's tenure in the game, to much improved during Aaron's career, to damn near technologically luxurious since Bond's has been playing.

Keeping all this in mind, one thing holds true --- statistics don't lie. If you look at just the following six statistics, Ruth clearly the choice hands down. Let's start with the homers per at bats factor --- one for every 11.76 for Ruth, one for every 16.38 for Aaron, and one for every 12.92 for Bonds. Ruth's homers totaled just fewer than 25% of his total career hits, Aaron was at 20%, and Bonds the highest with 26%. Each of Ruth's homers brought in 3.1 RBI's, Aaron's 3.04, and Bonds only 1.57.

Ruth had the highest career average with .342, Aaron's was .305, and Bonds is currently at .298. Ruth's on base percentage was .474, Bonds is .444, and Aaron's was .374. Ruth's slugging percentage was .690 compared to .607 for Bonds and .555 for Aaron. Of the six statistics I just mentioned in this paragraph and the prior one, Ruth is on top of five of them.

Continuing with this type of thinking, Ruth had 1,448 fewer at bats than Bonds and a staggering 3,965 less than Aaron. Also, Ruth played in 483 fewer games than Bonds and 795 fewer games than Aaron. Saying that Ruth was the most impressive of the three is putting it mildly. For all practical purposes, he is the greatest home run hitter of all time.

Number 715 - the inspirational story of Hank Aaron

When Babe Ruth hits his last, number 714, in 1935, the world whole baseball thought that his feat could never be done in another life. After all, "the babe" was seen by many as the of the most beautiful clean hitter of all time, and it is an inspirational story. But like so many of the world and best records which had been defined, since it was meant to be broken. How this record should be rewritten came from an unlikely source who became a legend and the inspirational story of his own.

Henry Louis Aaron was born on February 5, 1934. It was a year was "The Babe" stroke number 714 and his long record date. Aaron was raised in poverty, his family was great and very poor. What in fact such inspiring story for all generation of athletes and sports fan is that Aaron was a black. A few many racist era, for a black to exceed the record set by "the babe" seemed unthinkable. This is perhaps where the romance of this inspiring story is defined. When Aaron was young, he could not afford baseball equipment. Therefore, he would make his own bat and tilted to bottle caps. Grew up in a cotton picking farm gave him strong hands and arms that naturally transported in its desire to already passionate play the ball.

Aaron began his career in professional baseball and inspiring history with the Indianapolis Clowns of the American League in the minor leagues and Negro, Aaron began his career in major league in 1954. (It is the last Negro League baseball player to have played in the major leagues). He played 21 seasons with the Boston, Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves in the National League and its last two years (1975-76) with the Milwaukee Brewers in the American League.

Her career and inspirational story in the major leagues was relatively calm. But slowly and steadily built it up to its number of surpassing 714. He hit 13 in 1954 in its first year of major league. He hit 27 the following year, 26 the year after this and then 44 in 1957. Forty lashes circuit in 1960. Forty-five in 1962. Forty-four in 1963, yet once in 1966 and again in 1969. Forty-seven in 1971. Quietly, relentlessly, Aaron continued the ghost of the best player of perhaps of baseball. Then the end of the 1973 season, and the 39-year old Aaron, who reached 40 home runs this year, had 713 for his career, one shy of the record.

Shoulder season of 1973 in 1974 was filled with emotional extremes for Aaron and his family in this inspiring story. In the winter, the same year, they received thousands of genuine supporters wishing him well and all the best. Many of them were rooting of Aaron to break the record of Babe Ruth finally. They felt that it was the year that this objective could be achieved. Hank was still belting home runs with ease at this stage, unlike "the babe", which, at this stage of his career, has nothing more than an alcoholic quagmire because of his excessive lifestyle.

This, winter, Aaron also received his share of hate messages, mostly racists who can't understand the fact that a black man is a record that a white supremist had set way back in 1935. Four decades of domination white baseball was key to its end. Aaron, this hate mail was in fact a source of inspiration. Although he feared for his life and his family, he has never really left his desire to keep the swing away. It said the season in his own words, "I can't go into hibernation now", "73." I cannot hide. I said that I did that to break the record of Babe Ruth is to stay alive, but I have to live my life. "His inspirational story continued.

In the first game of the 1974 season in Cincinnati, Aaron hit number 714 out of the ball park, tying the record for time all of Babe Ruth. He has another would have two games more to Cincinnati, but his manager and Aaron wanted the record to be eclipse in their field, so his manager he deliberately suspended for Game 2 in Cincinnati. Unfortunately this will not down with the Commissioner of baseball, who claimed that it was contrary to the spirit of the game. Aaron started 3 game of the series, but was unable to hit the record breaker. He would have had the chance to do so in its own stadium to establish his inspirational story.

Monday evening, April 8, Pearl Bailey sang the national anthem. Burst of fireworks on the crowd more great stage of Atlanta had taken place. At 9: 07 from 53,775, and a national television, in its second hearing y but on his first swing of the evening, Aaron made fly shattered the record that had stood up to 39 years. The game was interrupted for 11 minutes for all wishing to much fanfare. In the process of surpassing 714, hank also quietly passed another point of reference to baseball. Aaron entered the 2,063 rd race of his career, put him ahead by Mays for the head of the National League and behind Ty Cobb and Ruth overall.

Thus ends this inspirational story and chase history for one of the most beloved baseball for all folders. Hank Aaron would hit number 755 which would not be broken until 2007 by Barry Bonds of the Giants in San Francisco. But that record will be to always be tarnished by alleged drug use.

7 Tips for Fantasy Baseball beginners

Fantasy baseball has been a great part of my life over the past few years. I have won and lost my fair share of fantasy baseball leagues. In my experience, I learned a few things about fantasy baseball, I would like to share. I've compiled seven tips that will prove beneficial for any sports fan new to fantasy baseball world.

1. You must put some serious time in to know the players and draft trends. Fantasy baseball leagues are more often than not won and lost during the draft. The draft sets your roster throughout the season. You can never prepare drafts in my opinion.

2. draft the best player available. When it comes time to make your pick does not Let favoritism get in the game. You must select the best players not your favorite players. I have found this is difficult to even after all these years. But in order to build a successful team bias must be left at the door.

3. draft closers. In most fantasy baseball leagues saves is an out-weighed category. This fact alone should tell you always prepare a at the top of the line closer, you'll have a chance. Preparing a top closer you win easily this category week after week.

4. Stay away from drafting players based on potential. When it comes to drafting hyped players stay away. Always draft established actors. In this way, you can feel confident in your team likely performance prior to opening day.

5. spring training statistics are not consistently over season Stretch. Often times a player get hot while playing in the pre-season exhibition game. These actors can act as a person to prepare for your team, but they are not. The drafting as this will be the death of the team. Stick to that work, and that is by preparing them with experience.

6. Use league rules to your advantage. One rule very common in the beginner leagues is an unlimited roster moves. This rule, you can add and drop and the power to trade players when you want without any restriction. What could be better? Keep your eyes on the players to get better as the season progresses and pick, you must add them to your roster at the right time.

7. be an active owner. Teams normally win in fantasy leagues have the most active owners. These owners will send messages to other owners, constantly makes the player research, listen to baseball experts, see MLB games every day and always make your team better whether it be through free agency or trades. In fantasy baseball move you cannot afford to be afraid to make risky. At the end of the road may or may not pay from but no matter what you want to learn to play in the future.

If you're looking for a leg up on your fantasy baseball competition then use these seven tips. I guarantee that you will go into your fantasy draft feel confidence and ready to dominate your League. Hope you find these tips useful. Good luck and have fun!

Start your own Fantasy Baseball League

The Commissioner for a fantasy baseball league is not an easy task. The hours are long. You manage often a bunch of crybabies. And wages: it sucks.

Hopefully you'll get the rules so that there is no possible disputes in the season, you have the rule, but there is always a guy looking for a loophole in the rules to take advantage of. It is, of course, a game of dots, so why should not be leaders look for ways to maximize their points. It is up to you to create a set of rules that attempt to cover all possible situations that occur. Not easy.

Here are some of the decisions, a Commissioner needs to make when you start a League.

I think its always a good idea to have a cash prize. Secure, winning the league trophy and bragging rights are important, but there is nothing motivates fantasy baseball managers through a long season than a cash prize.

Cash price should not only be for first place. Give cash prizes for the entire first half of the League. If a manger falls early, they have an incentive to get involved and try to move to fifth place in a ten team league.

How much money is the issue. The amount of money invested per player will depend on how wealthy friends in the league. It should be enough to keep them interested, but not so much that they start hating you, if you make a decision as Commissioner to cost them more than just a night out with their wife or girlfriend. Consider about $ 100-$ 300 per manager.

LEAGUE SIZE AND DEPTH

It is not often that you can get a group of more than 10 into a League. It is useful if you have 20 or more in a League, but it is really a lot of work and hard to assemble.

Get cash up front or you want to see the team disappear in the week before the draft. Who plays havoc with Commissioners and many leagues is abandoned at the last moment of precisely this reason.

It has always been my opinion that a League, is profoundly more fun than one where the teams are comprised of all all stars. All are familiar with Derek Jeter and A-Rod. A true test is to find out who knows about Dustin Moseley and Francisco Cervelli. (A deep league is someone who has almost as many fantasy team as real-life teams so that teams must be stocked with both starters and reserves from MLB).

Really get a deep league together, you will often have to decide whether to make the National League or American only-only League.

THE POINTS SYSTEM

In the early years of fantasy baseball, was the original 4 x 4 League invented as the norm. Keep track of 8 statistical categories was about everything a League Commissioner could handle if he does not have a job at IBM.

Today, however, with the spread of the State Internet services, you do an almost unlimited amount of statistical categories. Some services will even keep track of balks you!

Add a category like CATEGORY SPACES will make your league more life to the real game of baseball. Reduced men overlooked usually in fantasy baseball, seems sensible statistical category. As for sacrifice bunts, balks or I will leave that to them to decide.

While have oddball statistical categories can be fun, usually more is less.

TO LEADER LIGÆR OR POINT LIGÆR

There is certainly something to say to both the leader and point leagues, so this is a personal decision. One of the advantages of leader leagues is to seem to keep players motivated, they want to turn off their comrades, even if it means playing spoiler late in the season. It is also better reflects the true baseball, but it goes against traditional fantasy baseball leagues cereals.

With Commander leagues, vibrations can occur every week, just as in real games. Better managers and better team win not always every week as a weaker team can get hot. During the long season, however, want better teams and leaders victories in a points league.

Daily or weekly LINEUP changes

Some leagues allow for daily lineup changes. This is almost too much work for busy guys. It means you numregenerator players and out every day and take advantage of days, potential rainouts and special sequences for the night.

Regardless of how much of a fantasy baseball nerd you are, it is almost too much over a 6 month season. You do not want to be responsible for a divorce.

Weekly Shift leagues be more sensible, but educate potential question of starting pitcher streaming (where a manager uses 2 starting pitchers this week on his starting lineup). Frankly, I think 2 starting pitcher streaming is an interesting addition to a fantasy baseball leagues, so I would recommend the possibility of weekly lineup changes.

If you have a group of friends who are reliable and at least half of them will return to the next season, perhaps a keeper league makes sense for you. Most leagues allow for up to 15 users from year to year; Some may be as few as 3 per year.

You will always have the conveyor belt in leaders each year. Gives fewer users from one year to the next will promote new blood in your league so keep users to a minimum from year to year seems to be the most sensible.

The draft--Auction or Snake draft

It is a different decision based on the commitment and experience of your players. An auction draft is more complicated and will require further preparation to your leaders, but in the end its more fun and adds a new element in relation to the draft process. Make an auction draft, you must almost be in the same room with all the other leaders, which makes it online or by telephone would be a long and difficult process.

The draft is not an auction for each League, but if you can drag it off, it is clearly more fun.

It is inevitable that you will some controversy over the rules. You can not think of everything. While it is ideal to have a Commissioner who is not the owner of a team in the League, is unrealistic and rarely is there a knowledgeable person willing to be involved, without the need to have a team in the League.

To put things up for a vote will only make things worse. When controversy arrives, search everyone's opinion and then rely on a group of 3 of the most experienced and fair managers to be your advisory board, and then make your decision. Not everyone will like it, but in the end, the Commissioner shall decide.

Fantasy Baseball history

Passion for fantasy baseball came today from a group of men who grew up playing baseball board games, namely the APBA (American Professional Baseball Association) and Strat-O-Matic. APBA, invented by Dick Seitz in 1951, was the first baseball board games to base its findings on the Statistics of actual major league players. Strat-O-Matic, invented by Hal Richman, followed with his new games in 1963 and a new phenomenon was born. If you grew up in the 60 's or 70, played you without a doubt one of those baseball board games. (I still have a number of Strat-O-Matic game map from the first season of my brethren began to play in 1966).

The day the card arrived,  usually  in February, was the biggest day of the year. While we all had our orders, we would rush to whomever was the luckiest to get cards first. Then we would help him separate cards (they came in a large sheet of nine cards linked to each other as I remember) and place them on the right team.

The game was with results based on the roll of the dice, statistically very accurate. However, there was a major problem with APBA and Strat-O-Matic: do we replay last season or use last season statistics to replay this season? Some guys (this is how I did it) would get the new card and immediately make the subjects which were done through the Hot Stove League other replayed the previous season.

Rudimentary game played with cards and dice is boring by today's video standards. APBA and Strat-O-Matic is moved to a computer-based games in the 1990s, but it was still basic card game will be played via a computerised dice roll. Stacked up against graphics MLB 2008, I could not see today's video generation to get in a baseball board games for a very long time.

No doubt, however, that it was a love for baseball statistics learned of many young men from player APBA and Strat-O-Matic, fantasy baseball such an instant hit. And a 1981 baseball strike, left the original leaders, who were all journalists, scrambling for something to write about.

Daniel Okrent, of The New York Times, is credited with the creation of concept for fantasy baseball in 1980. There seems to be considerable evidence that Okrent invented the game as opposed to Abner Doubleday's claims, there is a clean explanation. Back then it was called Rotisserie Baseball because the origins of the game began at La Francoise Rotisserie a restaurant in New York City where the original fantasy baseball leaders met.

A little known fantasy baseball is to beat the idea of Okrent had to organize the first ever league week before to a group of friends on another restaurant called "Pit." Okrents original group does not, however, was interested. It is good, or we would play PitBall today. Does not sound as Nice, makes it?

Okrent was born in 1948, and was graduated from the University of Michigan. Okrent began the tradition of naming the team for the Manager's name. Okrents original team was Okrent Fenokees. Recently succeeded him Dan Druffs.

Several other leaders from the original Rotisserie League moved to become very famous journalists. Glenn Waggoner is the Publisher of ESPN The Magazine. Rob Fleder and then leader of Fleder mouse is Executive Editor of Sports Illustrated. Valerie Salerbien is Deputy Director for Esquire magazine.

Statistics from the Fantasy Sports Trade Association shows that 16 million people play fantasy sports in the United States. Fantasy football is the largest part of the fantasy circle with an estimated 10 million players. Fantasy baseball managers use on average three hours per week managing their teams. They invest $ 175 per year on fantasy sports for software, research, magazines and league prize money. This makes fantasy sport a $ 1.5 billion industry.

Back in the days when the pastime was known as Rotisserie Baseball, it was not quite so easy to run a League. Statistics were not so easy to get and league standings had to be kept in the hand. United States Today is credited with makes it much easier to be a Rotisserie manager through its comprehensive and easy to read box scores and statistics.

Today, CBS Sports line, Yahoo and ESPN do run a fantasy baseball team and league. The three units pay Major League Baseball Advanced Media $ 2 million per year for rights to use the player statistics, images and logos on their sites. Major League Baseball Advanced Media, which collects licensing payments on behalf of the MLB Players ' Association, works now with only seven licensees to fantasy baseball, in contrast to 19 as late as in 2004.

Fantasy baseball today is everywhere and shows no signs of decline. Heck, even if you see the movie in Knocked Up, you see a reference to fantasy baseball.

The New York Yankees

The New York Yankees have to be considerd the Crown jewel  of major League Baseball. They won the World Championships  26 times, the most in team sports, and they won the pennant of the American League a stunning 39 times.

The Yankees were founded in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles, but they lasted two seasons as Orioles before moving to New York as the New York Highlanders. They became the Yankees in 1913 and Yankee Stadium in the Bronx moved in 1923 and the most victorious team in professional sports is born.

From the 2009 season the Yankees have Christened their new ballpark, which is also known as Yankee Stadium, directly across from the original Yankee stadium. The new stadium  cost an estimated one point six billion which makes it the most expensive stadium ever built in the United States.

The Yankees are on the point to remain the dominant team of the next decade due, in part, the additional income will be generated by the new stadium. Curiously there are fewer seats in the new stadium than in the former, but there are more luxury boxes and premium seats.

The Yankees main competition in recent years has been the Boston Red sox, but the field becomes a little more crowded with the Tampa Bay Rays should also be in the mix in future seasons. The Yankees finished behind the Red Sox and the rays in 2008, and they are determined that won't happen again soon.

They went and got the best players available in the 2008 free agent class. Player first baseman Mark Teixeira, from pitcher c.c. Sabathia and veteran pitcher all-Star Game A.J. Burnett, all joined the Yankees during the shoulder season. They spent  423.5 million on these three players for the duration of their contracts so far less than a couple of World Championships will be a disappointment.

The Yankees and their fans hope certainly that their free agent class of 2008 will join the ranks of the Yankee legends who brought the pinstripes before them. The Yankees have currently twenty-one players who have been in the Baseball Hall of Fame wearing a Yankees hat on their bust, and yet they withdrew only sixteen of these figures. This means that there are five players in the Baseball Hall of Fame were not enough good have their numbers retired by the Yankees. It is now a star studded franchise.

The Yankees are a world class organization that only considers a season a success if there is a world series trophy presented to them in October. Because of their new ballpark, large signatures off season and the continued leadership of shortstop Derek Jeter, they will be the Favorites to win for several upcoming seasons
